Can you feel it? It is 10 days and counting down to Christmas Day! It is crunch time now as the pressure builds to find just the right gift in the right size, color, style and of course, the perfect price.
The shopping malls are crowded now and you may be spending every free minute trying to finish (or maybe start) your holiday shopping. Maybe you have already noticed that the best time to shop is between 5 and 7pm because most shoppers are either home for dinner or are in a restaurant having dinner. The crowds are thinner and you can get actually get the attention/help of the department store clerk.
Holiday shopping is hard work and oh-oh….What is that sound? Did your stomach just let out that growl? Yes, it probably did if you came directly from work and did not stop for refueling. Suddenly you notice the food court and the free sample lady. And it would be so nice to get off of your feet for just 5 minutes.
Fast food is way too appealing and easily justified in a situation like this. Next time, come prepared. Pack some bottled water so that you don’t have to buy a soda or hot chocolate because you are thirsty. And while you are at it, throw in a granola bar for some energy to walk by the fast food franchises.
Be careful about the granola bar you select: look for one that has a fair amount of protein (6-10gm), is made with whole grains, is low in sugar (less than 8gm). Nuts are good; so is chocolate. (I love anything that includes some chocolate) What you don’t want is a candy bar wrapped in a cereal label; something like Kashi would be ideal.
I got most of my shopping finished on my day off on Monday. I was very organized. I left the house early for an 8:45 am physical therapy appointment with a detailed agenda in my hand which included everything but lunch. Maybe if I followed my own advice I wouldn’t have stopped at the Dairy Queen on my way out of the mall. At least I got some protein from the peanuts on top of my sundae!
