Spring has sprung! At least in Florida. And what that means is we take advantage of a short growing season. Pretty soon it will get too hot for tomato plants and most vegetables are susceptible to nematodes in the native soil.
- Gardening is a great way to relax.
- Home grown produce tastes better than anything you can buy at the grocer’s or even the farmer’s market.
- It is the only way that you can control the amount of pesticide residue your family is exposed to.
- Families who garden eat more vegetables and children who garden are willing to try more vegetables.
It’s only April and I have already picked tomatoes and a handful of strawberries. Yum! Last weekend I planted banana trees and pineapple plants, and fertilized the tangerine/lemon tree. It will be months before I see the “fruits” of this labor but I am patient and can be satisfied with bananas from the market.
In the mean time, if you are living up north under that big storm on the weather map, you can start your vegetable plants indoors. Start with veggies everyone likes and add 1 or 2 you’ve never eaten. Do it for your self and do it for your family.
